Structure: A Four-Chambered Wonder

The heart is a muscular organ roughly the size of a fist, nestled within the protective cage of the ribcage. It's divided into four chambers:

 * Atria (singular: atrium): The two upper chambers, the right and left atria, receive blood returning to the heart.

 * Ventricles: The two lower chambers, the right and left ventricles, are responsible for pumping blood out of the heart.

A muscular wall called the septum separates the right and left sides of the heart, ensuring that oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood don't mix.

Function: The Circulatory Maestro

The heart's primary function is to maintain blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to every cell in the body while removing waste products. 

This is achieved through two interconnected circulatory pathways:

 * Pulmonary Circulation: The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs for oxygenation.

 * Systemic Circulation: The left side of the heart receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it to the rest of the body.

The Heartbeat: A Coordinated Dance

The heart's rhythmic contractions, or heartbeats, are orchestrated by a complex electrical system. 

Specialized cells within the heart generate electrical impulses that cause the heart muscle to contract in a coordinated manner.

 * Diastole: The relaxation phase, during which the heart chambers fill with blood.
 * Systole: The contraction phase, during which blood is pumped out of the heart.

Beyond the Basics

While the heart's core function is pumping blood, it's also involved in other vital processes, such as:
 * Hormone Production: The heart produces hormones that help regulate blood pressure and fluid balance.
 * Immune Function: The heart plays a role in fighting infections.
